Back in 2007, Bill Detwiler, Technology Editor of TechRepublic wrote about the significant security risks posed by modern office copiers. He stated that  “ Almost every copier made since 2002 contains a hard drive, which stores a copy of every document the machine scans, prints, copies, or faxes.”

“CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian talked about the threat with John Juntunen, who’s company Digital Copier Security developed software designed to scrub data from copier hard drives. Juntunen and CBS News purchased four used copies from a New Jersey warehouse. Using data recovery software available for free on the internet, they were able to recover thousands of documents from the machines.

One of the machines had been used by the Buffalo, N.Y., Police Sex Crimes Division. The hard drive from it yielded “detailed domestic violence complaints and a list of wanted sex offenders.” A second machine from the Buffalo Police Narcotics Unit, contained “targets in a major drug raid. ” On the third machine, once used by a New York construction company, CBS News and Juntunen found “design plans for a building near Ground Zero in Manhattan; 95 pages of pay stubs with names, addresses and social security numbers; and $40,000 in copied checks.”

But despite the sensitivity of the information discovered on the first three machines, it was the information on the fourth machine that they found what Keteyian called the “most disturbing documents.” The machine, once used by Affinity Health Plan, a New York insurance company, contained “300 pages of individual medical records.”  These records included “everything from drug prescriptions, to blood test results, to a cancer diagnosis.”

There are ways to wipe data from copy machine hard drives. But as this report shows, many organizations aren’t making the effort, aren’t aware of the risk, or aren’t verifying that the data has been erased before decommissioning old copiers.

Have you ever wondered what the perfect job would be? Just letting your mind wander to the possibilities without restrictions, obligations, or geography? Until few years ago, I still had dreams of being a Dallas Cowboy’s Cheerleader, unfortunately, being fully endowed was not a blessing bestowed upon me!

Okay, Okay, back to reality.

With all of the politics in world of Corporate Security, and having to deal with the glass ceiling, how can women become successful business owner?  I have my days where I just want to throw in the towel and become a Wal-Mart door greater. Yeah, I said it, a Wal-Mart door greater.

Wait! Let me think about that one for a second, I am a Sam Walton Emerging Entrepreneurs Award Winner., and I can’t get a Sam Walton small business loan? What’s up with that? Can someone please call Superior Financing for me?

Okay, let me get back to my dream job!

Maybe, being a Wal-Mart door greeter just doesn’t sound that much fun anymore!

List Run my Life!

I can’t function without a list.  I’m  speaking of a do list, grocery list, a good place to blog list, a business organization list.  My life is consumed with list, and not to mention my bucket list.

I have crossed off things on the list and added a few more on the list.  How did I ever function without a list?

I have read every book out there about getting more site visits, and its still amazes me what I don’t know!

Literally, it freaks me out when I realized what a big job it is to do social marketing, and to pay someone to do it.  Hey, it’s not CHEAP!  I am a struggling business owner.

Do you think social marketing is a waste of time for the return?

How may I Appeal if I am Denied Information Under the Privacy Act?

If the Privacy Act Branch denies you access to any information pertaining to you, you may appeal to their supervisor’s office at OPM Headquarters or directly to the government agency to which your case has been referred if moved from OPM.

Or you my contact a lawyer that handles this type of case.

Due to a terrible accident, I found myself sitting in traffic instead of enjoying the wonderful Holiday Tour at The White House with some of my CMI colleagues.

 As I turned around to make my drive back home, I found myself crying and pouting like I was a 5 year-old.  I felt I had let Nell Merlino,  and the rest of the Count Me In Group down.  I am sure you have heard the phrase “When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade.”  This ageless proverb has long served as a beacon of hope and comfort to grieving souls worn by life’s most complex and heart-wrenching difficulties.   Why am I thinking about Lemons?

While driving back home, tired and cold, I received a telephone call and at first I hesitated to answer it, and then a voice inside of me said go ahead, you have nothing better to do.

I answered the phone with a bit of attitude and said, “This is Diane, how may I help you?”  The deep, masculine voice on the other end responded by saying, “Maybe we can help each other.”  I immediately changed the tone in my voice and hung on every word the caller was saying.  The caller started by stating he would like to start an affiliate program to help sell my book and, since he deals with military bases throughout the U.S., he would also like to introduce my company to some of his clients.  

We chatted a little longer about how one would go about getting a government security clearance and the terrible unemployment rate, and I really started to feel a little better.  We are women, we are use to disappointments in life, right?  After the conversation ended, I realized several things:

1. Nell and the Count Me In group will be there as long as I need them.  
2. I can sign up for The White House Tour anytime.
3. I can send President Obama and Michelle the questions I had about the unemployment rate by email.  

 So, “Count Me In” while I make lemonade out of my lemons—with a slice of chocolate cake, tonight!

I must say being asked to attend the white house tour is both an honor and privilege for me.  I have been in the Washington metropolitan area for a little over 10 years, and I am honored to represent the Make Mine a Million – Count Me IN organization, as well as, women owned businesses.

As of October, the economy wasn’t even creating enough jobs to absorb new graduates and other new members of the work force. The number of people officially considered among the long-term unemployed was 6.2 million, and that’s not counting the 2.6 million people who aren’t working but also aren’t numbered among the unemployed because they’re no longer looking for work.
